Ne matrix hosting XenCl exciplexes: comparison with Ar and Xe hosts

Abstract

The low-lying excimer states of XeCl and Xe2Cl in neon, argon, and xenon matrices were studied using absorption and time-resolved emission spectra. Four bands in the Ne/Xe/Cl spectrum are assigned to be B,C←X absorption of XeCl, to an absorption of Xe2Cl, and to chlorine atoms trapped in xenon clusters. Excitation spectra of the B→X and C→A,X emissions in neon are presented. Time-resolved spectroscopy of the C→A band in argon (lifetime 60±8 ns, λex=340.5 nm) reveals an overlapping band of 9±2 ns lifetime which simulates a red-shift of the C→A emission in time-integrated spectra with λex>337 nm. Assignment of the short-lived component to the B→A transition of XeCl must be rejected. A weak equally short-lived emission at 28 600 cm−1 is tentatively assigned to the B→X transition.
