The limitation of DNA synthesis underlying the processes of cell polyploidy is associated with a decrease in the level of proliferation since the mechanism of polyploidisation of the liver is an alternation of acitokinetic and complete mitoses (Nadal and Zajdela, 1966). A possible prerequisite for limiting the replicative genome function can be the performance of certain tissue-specific tasks, such as lipid absorption, and glycogen synthesis, which manifest as increases in total lipid and glycogen contents (see Table 4).

This excessive amount of nuclear characteristics suggests some polyploidization phenomenon via the blocking of mitosis at the meta- and anaphases, an active part in the transition from mitotic cycle to endo-reduplication [15–19]. It has been demonstrated in vegetal cells that the heterogeneity in volume of polyploid nuclei depends on its DNA content and other parameters, such as the amount and conformation of nuclear proteins, RNA molecules, and the degree of chromatin condensation [8,15,20,21].

Regenerative liver growth differs markedly from developmental liver growth, the most striking difference being the rapid disappearance of binucleated hepatocytes.
