Summary
Hepatitis C in addiction care: a call for attention
Esther Croes and Clary van der Veen
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease with a high prevalence among (ever injecting) drug users. Many patients have not been traced and are thus a source for further transmission. Besides further transmission, in the end an untreated infection may lead to serious complications and reduce quality of life. However, the disease is treatable and treatment often has a positive side effect on the general (social) functioning of the patient. In this article, we present arguments underscoring the need for good quality hepatitis C care. We also describe why the addiction care should have a leading role in this somatic disorder, but that in practice this care is only provided on a small scale. Ideally, hepatitis C care would range from counseling, advice and tracing of carriers, to support during treatment and after care, to maintain the improvements in health and social functioning that were obtained. It is of note that the treatment itself is under the responsibility of the liver specialist in hospital. We argue for a boost in the hepatitis C care for drug users from the addiction care.
Notes
