Vermindering van suïcidaliteit bij adolescenten door een schoolgericht vaardigheidsprogramma

Dit artikel bespreekt het effect van een vaardigheidsprogramma voor adolescenten op suïcidaliteit. Uit eerder onderzoek naar dit programma bleek dat er significante effecten te zien waren op geloof in persoonlijke effectiviteit, zelfbeeld, spanning bij het adequaat uiten van negatieve emoties en de intentie om sociale en emotionele vaardigheden te gebruiken. Uit secundaire analyses blijkt dat het programma nog een bij-effect heeft, namelijk een afname van süıcidaliteit.

Voor deze studie is gebruikgemaakt van een quasi-experimenteel design met een experimentele (n = 412) en een controlegroep (n = 546). Er is een mediatiemodel getest door middel van een kleinste-kwadraten multipele regressie-analyse. Hierin is onderzocht of de effecten van het vaardigheidsprogramma op suïcidaliteit worden gemedieerd doordat de variabelen geloof in persoonlijke effectiviteit, zelfbeeld, adequaat uiten van negatieve emoties en intentie om sociale en emotionele vaardigheden te gebruiken mogelijk als beschermende factoren fungeren. De resultaten laten zien dat het programma direct effect heeft op suïcidaliteit en steunt het mediatiemodel deels: de effecten van het programma op suïcidaliteit worden alleen significant gemedieerd door zelfbeeld.
