Analytical Evaluation of Throughput for a Bluetooth Piconet with MAC Level Link Adaptation

Abstract

In this paper a MAC level Link Adaptation (LA) strategy to be implemented in a Bluetooth piconet is investigated: the performance level that can be achieved in terms of throughput is derived and the comparison with the case of no LA is performed.

Suitable definitions of the performance figures related to throughput are given and, starting from the knowledge of the physical level performance obtained via simulation, their analytical evaluation is performed in both the cases of LA and no LA.

All aspects related to the propagation characteristics of the environment, the modulation/demodulation and coding/decoding techniques, and the multiple access strategy are taken into account in an integrated way; moreover a reference scenario analytically characterized along with a realistic scenario have been considered for the performance level assessment.

The analytical results have been compared with simulation outcomes which confirm the validity of the approach adopted.

Gianni Pasolini received his Laurea degree in Telecommunications Engineering and his Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 1999 and 2003, respectively. In May 1999 he joined CSITE-CNR (Centre for Studies in Computer Science and Telecommunication Systems of the National Research Council), now IEIIT-BO/CNR, as a researcher in the field of wireless communications. His research activity is concerned with Wireless Local Area Networks, Digital Communications and Radio Resource Management. He is a member of IEEE.

Roberto Verdone received his Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering (with honors) and his Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 1991 and 1995, respectively. In the period 1996–2001 he was a researcher at the CNR (National Research Council) in Telecommunications. In November 2001 he became Full Professor in Telecommunications at the University of Bologna, where he teaches Radio Systems. His research activity is concerned with Digital Transmission and Radio Network Aspects of Cellular and Mobile Radio Systems, Wireless Local Area Networks, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Ad Hoc and Wireless Sensor Networks. Since 1992 he authored 20 manuscripts issued on international journals and about 50 conference papers. In the last decade he has been involved in several Projects funded by CNR, the Italian Ministry for Research, and other bodies. Since 1997 to 2000 he has participated to COST activities. In 2001 he became chairman of the WG on Network Aspects within Action COST273, and he is National delegate for that Action. He belongs to the Executive Board of NEWCOM, the Network of Excellence on Wireless COMmunications funded by EU in the context of the sixth Framework Programme. He is a member of IEEE.
