Abstract
An effective method of 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,26-dialkoxy-27,28-dihydroxy-calix[4]arenes and 25,26,27,28-tetraalkoxycalix[4]arenes synthesis by alkylation of tetrahydroxycalix[4]arenes in a DMSO-NaOH medium was developed.

By potentiometric or photometric titration in water of tetrahydroxycalix[4]arene bearing four SO2(CH2CH2OH)2 groups at the wide (upper) rim it has been shown that pKa values for OH groups at the narrow rim are increasing as follows: pK1 = 0.8, pK2 = 9.7, pK3 = 12.5, pK4 > 14. (For review on pKa values of calixarenes see ref. 1, pp. 34–36).
