Heating and Melting in Impacts: Basic Theory and Possible Applications

International Journal of Thermophysics Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

Mutual collisions and impacts of solids occur in systems of widely different scales. The aim of this paper is to present a calculation of the change of temperature which a solid target undergoes when hit by a solid impactor. As a test, the equations derived are applied to examples of laboratory experimental data, and the results are physically plausible.
