Results from studies of the alkaline hydrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate fiber to terephthalic acid by modified aqueous solutions of ammonium salts of various chemical nature are presented. The quaternary ammonium salts enabling the degree of substrate conversion, yield of terephthalic acid, and selectivity of polyester fiber reprocessing to be improved by changing the amorphous-crystalline structure of the polymer are determined.
