Find Your Beat: Therapeutic Drumming for Parkinson’s Disease

Abstract

As of 2012, approximately 1 million people had Parkinson’s disease in the United States, and that figure is projected to increase as the population continues to age. Parkinson’s disease symptoms can impair an individual’s ability to communicate, in some cases contributing to social isolation. Effective complementary treatments for Parkinson’s disease are needed, particularly to address the non-motor symptoms, including depression and anxiety. This article examines a therapeutic drumming program offered to patients with Parkinson’s disease at a large teaching hospital in the United States.
