Abstract

In this paper we correct a previous paper (Oertel and Świ a̧ tkowski, Ann Global Anal Geom 34(2):135–152, 2008), which gives sufficient conditions for a branched surface embedded in a closed 3-manifold to carry a “contamination.” Such a contamination, in special cases, represents a contact structure, and every contact structure is represented by a contamination. The correction is of a technical nature; the ideas in the previous paper remain valid. We also present a generalization of the carrying criterion to branched surfaces with boundary.
