Characterization for metamaterials with a high refractive index formed by periodic stratified metallic wires array

Abstract

A mechanism for exploiting bulk metamaterials formed by periodic stratified metallic wires array with extremely high refractive index is introduced and the maximum refractive index can be well described and determined by a coupled Bloch wave placed inside the constructed periodic systems. The higher refractive index characteristics are numerically studied with the retrieval method and Fabry–Pérot resonance transmission analysis. The results show that the unambiguous high effective refractive index near the resonance frequency is obtained with the designed parameters, which confirms the prediction that the maximum value that the metamaterials reach depends mainly on the periodicity at the propagation direction.
