Radial characterization of 3D-LCVD carbon fibers by Raman spectroscopy

Abstract

The internal structure of carbon fibers grown by 3D-LCVD was characterized by Raman spectroscopy at 514.5 nm using an Ar+ laser. Fibers were polished along an axial plane. Several spectra were taken alongside the radius to perform an analysis of the fiber composition. Each spectrum has been analyzed by noting the peak positions and width changes. Intensities of the G, D, D and G peaks were compared between spectra. Our analysis shows that the internal structure of carbon fibers changes from a polycrystalline graphite core to an amorphous carbon outer layer.
