  13. Izaak Maurits Kolthoff is widely regarded as the father of modern analytical chemistry. Two of his best known students were J. J. Lingane (Ph.D., 1938) and H. A. Laitinen (Ph.D., 1940). The latter was editor of Analytical Chemistry for 14 years (1966–1979). See Coetzee, J. 40. The opening statement was, “The frequently used standard addition method (SAM) was first described for flame photometric analysis of Sr in seawater by Chow and Thompson more than 50 years ago.” As stated, this assertion may be technically correct, but we do not wish to excuse our misattribution. We also inadvertently gave the wrong date of their paper as 1951 instead of 1955. We welcome this opportunity to correct the record.
