Make sure you enter “Spectroscopy Challenge 7” in the subject line of your e-mail. The winner will receive notice via e-mail and his/her name will be published on the ‘Springer’ Chemistry website http://www.springeronline.com and in the Journal. Readers will find the solution and a short explanation on the ‘Springer’ Chemistry website after August 15, 2004, and in the Journal (Issue 380/5).
The next Analytical Challenge will be published in issue 380/1, September 2004. If you have enjoyed solving this Challenge you are invited to try the previous puzzles (Spectroscopy Challenge 1, in Issue 375/6; Spectroscopy Challenge 2, in Issue 376/2; Spectroscopy Challenge 3, in Issue 376/6; Spectroscopy Challenge 4, in Issue 377/2; Spectroscopy Challenge 5, in Issue 377/6; Microfabrication Challenge, in Issue 378/1; Chemistry Logic Challenge, in Issue 378/5; Spectroscopy Challenge 6, in Issue 379/1; or on the ‘Springer’ Chemistry website http://www.springeronline.com).

For the fourth time this year, we would like to invite you to participate in the Analytical Challenge, a series of puzzles to entertain and challenge our readers. We hope you not only find this feature stimulating but that it provides you with points of further interest for your work and study. And please note: there is a prize to be won (a Springer-Verlag book from our catalogue up to a value of € 75).
These Analytical Challenges are published every 2 months. Last year, we began with a series of spectroscopy challenges by Ernö Pretsch and Renato Zenobi, which can still be viewed on the ‘Springer’ Chemistry website http://www.springeronline.com . In the present challenge a mystery substance may again be identified by means of a collection of six spectra. Please read on...
