Applications of the square root diffusivity to diffusion in Ni-Al-Cr alloys

Abstract

The square root diffusivity of a Ni-7.5 at. pct Al-9.0 at. pct Cr alloy was determined for two diffusion couples by using a “constant diffusivity” analysis. Then the diffusivity was substituted into model equations in order to predict the behavior of five other diffusion couples. Although the nominal compositions of the five other couples differed by up to 5 at. pct from the original alloy, it was found that the concentration profiles were predicted to within ±0.1 at. pct, that the amount of solute which interdiffused was predicted to within 10 pct, and that the type of profile which occured was normally predicted correctly.
