Summary
Like the so-called mixed tumour of the salivary gland, the socalled mixed tumour of the lacrimal gland also distinguishes itself by a multiplicity of pathic events in the intercellular interstitium of the clusters and bands of the tumoral epithelium.
Besides the known deposits of chondrinous material and the mucoid swelling, argyrophil, PAS-positive and fuchsinophil as well asfuchselinophil (orceinophil) structures develop in the intercellular interstitium of the so-called mixed tumours. These structures, being reticular, collagenous-hyaline andelastic structures, have been either hardly noticed up to now or have remained unobserved. They frequently occur in enormous number and often are of very uncommon appearance in the form of a special trabecular framework, spider- or bretzel-shaped figures and in the form of coarse accumulations.
This pathic event in the intercellular interstitium of the socalled mixed tumour is induced by the tumoral epithelium and has to be interpreted as a consequence of achemical-material reaction between a special tumoral epithelium and a special colloidal ground-substance rich in polysaccharides of its intercellular interstitium and followed by the fact that unusual fibrous-fibrillary structures shoot up suddenly in the ground-substance in the manner of crystallisation. It is not quite comprehensible why hereby physical powers, tensional conditions, especially in the development of elastic structures, should be of essential importance also.
