Some factors influencing egg laying and site of oviposition byAphidoletes aphidimyza [Dipt.: Cecidomyiidae]

Abstract

The females of the aphidophagous gall midgeAphidoletes aphidimyza (Rond.) lay their eggs on artificial substrates supplied with aphids and honey-dew. If muslin, parafilm and filter paper were offered simultanously, muslin was preferred for oviposition.

The number of eggs laid on leaves from brussels sprouts decreased with increasing height from the ground (5–25 cm).

In complete darkness, almost no eggs were laid. Oviposition was highest at low light intensity (280 lux). In choice chambers with different light intensities the females laid most of their eggs in the dim chamber.

If light came from above, the lower surface of the leaves was always preferred. With illumination from below, however, the difference in egg numbers between upper and lower surface was not significant.
