Clinical evaluation of ofloxacin versus ciprofloxacin in complicated urinary tract infections

Summary

Ofloxacin was administered to 18 patients and ciprofloxacin to 17 patients suffering from acute or chronic complicated urinary tract infections. Patients received doses of 100 mg ofloxacin, b.i.d., or 250 mg ciprofloxacin, b.i.d., for seven days. The clinical and bacteriological response were evaluated after 17 days. Resolution of symptoms were found in approximately 60% of cases for both treatments and bacteriological eradication was 66% for ofloxacin and 50% for ciprofloxacin. Side-effects such as itching and rash were reported in three cases. The results indicate that ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin are safe and effective agents in the treatment of complicated urinary tract infections.

Zusammenfassung

Akute oder chronische komplizierte Harnwegsinfektionen wurden bei 18 Patienten mit Ofloxacin und bei 17 Patienten mit Ciprofloxacin behandelt. Die Behandlung erfolgte für sieben Tage entweder mit 100 mg Ofloxacin zweimal täglich oder mit 250 mg Ciprofloxacin zweimal täglich. Die Auswertung der klinischen und bakteriologischen Ergebnisse wurde nach 17 Tagen vorgenommen. Bei etwa 60% der Patienten beider Therapiegruppen waren die klinischen Symptome verschwunden, bei 66% der mit Ofloxacin und 50% der mit Ciprofloxacin behandelten Patienten wurden die bakteriellen Erreger eliminiert. In drei Fällen traten Nebenwirkungen in Form von Juckreiz und Exanthem auf. Aus den Ergebnissen ist zu schließen, daß Ofloxacin und Ciprofloxacin sichere und wirksame Medikamente für die Behandlung komplizierter Harnwegsinfektionen sind.
