The gas phase oxidation of elemental mercury by ozone

Water, Air, and Soil Pollution Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

The gas phase reaction between elemental mercury (Hg0) and ozone (03) has been studied in sunlight, in darkness, at different temperatures, and different surface-to-volume (s/v) ratios. At 03 concentrations above 20 ppm, a loss of Hg0 and a simultaneous formation of oxidized mercury (Hg(II)) was observed. The results suggest a partly heterogeneous reaction, with a gas phase rate constant of 3±2×10−20 cm3 molec.−1 s−1 at 20 °C. This corresponds to an atmospheric Hg half-life of about one year at a mean global 03 concentration of 30 ppb.
