Summary
Our experimental work was concerned with the structure of articular cartilage as seen in the LM and EM after homotransplantation. In the right medial condylus of the femur of the rabbit bone-cartilage defects were produced and stuffed with bone-cartilage homografts which had been preserved by fluid nitrogen. 2, 4 and 6 months after the operations the animals were sacrificed. Although there were no functional and radiological differences between the treated knee joints and the controls, LM- and EM-studies revealed numerous structural alterations in the grafts compared to normal articular cartilage. A first phase of the healing process was marked by regressive reactions. In a second phase connective tissue cells appeared which underwent a metaplastic transformation to cartilage cells. This new tissue showed the morphological criteria of hyaline cartilage.
