Summary and Conclusion

The experience in the treatment of 17 cases of mania with Thioproperazine (Majeptil) is reported. It is concluded that the use of this drug represents an advance in the treatment of this mental illness and that its use produces a very effective and rapid method of obtaining control of the state of excitement, elation and sometimes aggressiveness which is characteristic of these patients. The majority cease to be acute nursing problems, the peace of the ward is maintained, and within a few days, in most cases, no restriction on their activity needs to be maintained.

Side effects were not severe but occurred in ten patients in the form of Parkinsonism symptoms. They were easily controlled by the use of anti-Parkinsonism drugs and reduction of dosage of Thioproperazine. No toxic complications occurred.
