Summary

1. By means of paper chromatography, colorimetric, fluorimetric, and biological methods dopamine was found in extracts of all organs investigated.

2. The relation between noradrenaline and dopamine content in each organ was quite constant, irrespective of the species (oxen, sheep, and dogs). About 50% of the total catechol amine content of pancreas, parotid gland, spleen, and brain were dopamine; 94 to 99% dopamine were found in liver, colon, and jejunum. The rest was noradrenaline.

3. The high percentage of dopamine and the localization of dopamine in the intestinal mucosa favours the assumption that dopamine is not only the precursor of noradrenaline but also an active substance of its own, possibly a local hormone.

4. In sheep and dogs the pretratment with reserpine reduced the dopamine as well as the noradrenaline content of all organs to a high degree.
