A method of measuring acidity and protein digestion within the human stomach

  • Published:
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases

Conclusions

  1. 1.

A method of obtaining acid values in the antral region of the stomach is described.

  2. 2.

A method of obtaining an index of protein digestion in the antrum of the stomach is described.

  3. 3.

The pH of the antral content is lower than that of the stomach content as a whole.

  4. 4.

No constant difference exists between the pH of antral content and that obtained by aspiration.

  5. 5.

Gastric electrode pH values are usually lower than those of aspirated material.

  6. 6.

Antral pH readings give a better index of local protein digestion than those of aspirated material.

  7. 7.

Patients on a supposedly accurate neutralization therapy show active digestion of egg white in the antral region.
