The name Abnaki, translated as “Eastlander” or “Downlanders,” is derived from an Indian tribe that inhabited the area from Connecticut to Nova Scotia.

Formerly Horticulturist, Plant Science Research Division, Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Maryland, where work on developing this variety was done.
