Abstract
A complete description of the electric field gradient (EFG) tensor at the M2 site of Fe2+ in a natural magnesium-rich orthopyroxene (orthoenstatite) was obtained from single-crystal Mössbauer spectra of57Fe. The sign ofV zz , asymmetry parameter η, and orientation of the tensor with respect to the crystallographic axesa, b andc were determined.V zz is positive, and its direction is about (±0.07). The data for the tensor at the M1 site of Fe2+ are less accurate.V zz at M1 may be assumed to be about parallel to the [111] direction. The results obtained for orthoenstatite are compared with the data of other pyroxenes.
