An nicht narkotisierten Katzen wurde die Wirkung einer direkten lokalen chemischen Reizung subkortikaler Strukturen durch Melatonin untersucht. Diese Substanz, appliziert im Bereich der Area praeoptica, löste trophotropische Effekte und Schlaf aus.
