Summary
The chloromethylation of toluene was investigated in detail, and it was shown by the oxidation method that the reaction gives a mixture of α-chloro-o-xylene and α-chloro-p-xylene in almost equal proportions. The relative amounts of these products are almost independent of reaction conditions (catalyst, temperature, solvent, etc.).
