Summary

  1. 1.

When N-allyl lactams are heated with potassium tert-butoxide at 175–180° a prototropic isomerization to N-propenyl lactams is observed. The indicated reaction may serve as a general method for the synthesis of N-propenyl lactams. N-Propenylcaprolactam was synthesized for the first time.

  2. 2.

The infrared spectra, in the 700–1700 cm−1 region, and the ultraviolet spectra of the N-propenyl lactams were studied.
