Summary

  1. 1.

    The phagocytic activity of the reticulo-endothelial system in mice (carbon-clearance test) is depressed after intravenous injection of Cu-chlorophyllin. Both extent and duration of this reduction are dose-dependent and followed by a stimulation. The weights of liver and spleen are unchanged.

  2. 2.

    Cu-chlorophyllin depresses the endotoxin (1 μg/kg i.v.) stimulated RES too. The first peak 3 h after endotoxin application is more affected by Cu-chlorophyllin than the second one, which is accompanied by an increased weight of the spleen.

  3. 3.

    The carbon-suspension itself, which is used during the carbon-clearance test, stimulates the phagocytic activity from 8 h until 8 days. It increases the weight of the liver and spleen.

  4. 4.

    From these results it is concluded that the reduction in phagocytic activity is due to a specific direct action of Cu-chlorophyllin on the phagocyting cells.
