Summary
The lactic acid concentration of the efferent and afferent blood vessels of the rete mirabile of the eel was measured in vivo. When determined during the refilling phase of the swimbladder after puncture the lactic acid content of the efferent blood was increased up to 58 mg-% over the level of the afferent blood. This observation strongly supports the view of W. Kuhn and H. J. Kuhn discussed in detail in a previous paper whereby the rete mirabile works as a hairpin countercurrent mechanism. 45 mg-% lactic acid would, according to these considerations, using data of Scholander, be sufficient, if added to the afferent blood at the vertex of the rete, to transfer to the bladder approx. 50% of the rete arterial oxygen content, simultaneously increasing its partial pressure up to 100 or several 100 atm. This is possible by multiplication of the Bohr- and Root-effect by the rete mirabile working as a hair pin countercurrent system.
The increase of the electrolyte concentration due to secretion of lactic acid or other salts (salting out effect) in cooperation with the countercurrent system is likely the reason for the concentration of N2 and Ar.
