Summary

  1. 1.

A method for long term study of the mammalian retina in culture is described. The cells grown included differentiated ganglion cells, bipolar nerve cells, rods, cones, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes on a monolayer of mesenchymal cells.

  2. 2.

The fusion and splitting of the processes of nerve cells and astrocytes is described. Pulsations have been observed not only in neuroglial cells but also in nerve cells.

  3. 3.

The close relationship between the nerve cells and the glial and mesenchymal cells has been shown.

  4. 4.

All the cells in the retinal cultures were very susceptible to light, especially the segments of the rods and cones.

  5. 5.

Rosettes have been observed and their origin is discussed.

  6. 6.

Amitotic divisions but no mitoses have been seen in the nuclei of the astrocytes.
