Summary
Cranial pia mater, its relationship with cerebral cortex and penetration of blood vessels into the cortex have been studied from neurosurgical samples. Pial cells are long, slender, dense cells which contain some epithelial criteria and are not surrounded by any basal membrane. From their description and by comparison with arachnoideal cells, the authors discuss the problem of unicity or plurality of leptomeningeal cells.
About blood vessels penetration, the following features are described: progressive junction then complete fusion of the membrana basalis superficialis and the membrana basalis perivascularis, persistence of a complete sheath of limitans gliae around cerebral blood vessels, reality of a true Virchow-Robin space between the membrana basalis superficialis and perivascularis before their junction, absence of the space of His which is nothing but an artefact due to the fragility of the astrocytic feet constituting the limitans gliae.
