The behaviour of the cercaria of Cryptocotyle lingua

  • Published:
Zeitschrift für Parasitenkunde Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The cercaria of Cryptocotyle lingua responds to the onset of mechanical vibrations and to a decrease in light intensity by an increase in activity. The cercaria shows a decline in activity with age and an increase in activity with increasing temperature. Stimulation by host extract also initiates an increase in activity and penetration behaviour. A similar series of responses were found with amines of chain length C7–C9.

Evidence is presented that the activity rhythm, intrinsic to the tail, may be modified by a pacemaker in the body of the cercaria. This pacemaker may be influenced by a variety of exogenous and endogenous stimuli.
