Abstract
The aim of this letter is to draw attention to the fact that using atomic beam interferometry two new types of gravi-inertial effects are now within the range of measurability. Beyond the term linear in the earth's acceleration g, an effect quadratic in the acceleration seems to be observable. Furthermore, with regard to rotation, in addition to the Sagnac effect, a spin-rotation effect may be measurable. The respective experiments are of fundamental theoretical importance with regard to quantum mechanics in non-inertial reference frames and to the influence of gravity on quantum systems.

The phase shift for a COW-like experiment was first derived by J. Anandan: Phys. Rev. D 15, 1448 (1977). The general theory of a COW-like experiment with neutrons in non-inertial reference frames in curved Riemann-Cartan spacetime was given by J. Audretsch and C. Lämmerzahl based on the semiclassical limit of the Dirac equation: J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 16, 2457 (1983) (see also references therein), and Ann. Physik 44, 145 (1987). This approach has been discussed further by V.G. Baryshevskii and S.V. Cherepitsa: Class. Quantum Grav. 3, 713 (1986)

Spin flips are a special case of spin transformations arising at particular points. Mirrors may cause these transformation. The respective influence on the outcome of an interference experiment with neutrons has been considered by J. Anandan and B. Lesche: Lett. Nuovo Cim. 37, 391 (1983) and J. Audretsch and C. Lämmerzahl (comp. ref. [11]). There reasons are given that these effects can be neglected in the non-relativistic domain.
If the atom has different internal angular momentum J i when travelling in the flipped states along the paths of length Δl flip,i , we obtain \(\oint {\Omega Jdt = \sum\limits_i {2\omega } J_i \frac{{\Delta l_{flip,i} }}{{\upsilon _0 }}} \)
