Abstract
Uptake experiments were carried out on cultures of Scenedesmus obliquus exposed to 110mAg at different stages of development. The accumulation of the radionuclide was always rapid and intense, and equilibrium was reached in an exposure time of less than 24 hr. The uptake kinetics showed the algal concentration level depended only on the medium concentration and on the cell density at the time of 110mAg addition. Passive uptake was described by Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The very high concentration factor ranged from 1.8 × 105 to 2.5 × 106 (dry weight) in relation with the initial cell density. During the depuration phase, 110mAg retention by Scenedesmus obliquus developed in accordance with an exponential model based on the existence of two biological half-lives: a very short one of a few seconds and a longer one of 115 hr.
