Mapping the δ-aminolaevulinic acid dehydrase and porphobilinogen deaminase loci in Bacillus subtilis

Summary

Two genes (hemB, hemC) taking part in the porphyrin biosynthesis of Bacillus subtilis were mapped. The gene hemB determines δ-aminolaevulinic acid dehydrase, and the gene hemC prophobilinogen deaminase. The transductants from the experiments were grouped by routine replica plating, and the genotypes of certain recombinant classes were determined by the syntropism of each transductant clone. The loci hemA, hemB and hemC are closely linked to each other and located between the leu-l and pheAl loci. These hem genes are situated on the chromosome according to the order of the biosynthetic pathway.
