Summary

The aim of the present paper is to study the electrophysiology of mechanoreceptors connected with splanchnic neurons. The unitary activity of neurons is recorded by means of glass extracellular microelectrodes implanted in the spinal ganglia (T6-L1).

Two types of mechanoreceptors (gastro-intestinal and peritoneal receptors) have been revealed by punctiform stimulation. The former are located chiefly in the antrum whereas the latter are scattered in the mesentery, the kidney and gastric peritoneum.

The gastro-intestinal receptors are spontaneously activated by the intestinal contractions. They are also stimulated by artificial stimuli (distension, compression, stretching, local pression). Most of them belong to the slowly adapting type; however a few “on-off” receptors have been found. The fibres arising from the gastro-intestinal tract have a slow conduction velocity and belong chiefly to the type C.

The peritoneal receptors frequently show a spontaneous discharge produced by intestinal movements of digestive tract and they are activated by mechanical stimuli (stretching, compression). A great number of peritoneal receptors give a slowly adapting response. The other receptors concern the Pacinian corpuscules (“on-off receptors”). The fibres coming from the Pacinian corpuscules have a conduction velocity greater than the other fibres (61–70 m/sec instead of 2–14 m/sec).
