Summary
The presence of several interesting organisms in activated sludge is discussed. These organisms are: Helkesimastix faecicola, Lineola longa, Pelonema subtilissimum, Peloploca sp., Leucothrix cohaerens, Achronema sp., Spirulina albida and Saprochaete saccharophila.
Although their presence in natural environment in certain localities is known, there are but very few references about them in the literature. The occurence of these organisms in activated sludge has not been described yet.
The organisms described above were found in the activated sludge of many waste treatment plants (both municipal and industrial) and in laboratory installations treating synthetic sewage. Therefore there is no doubt about their participation in and contribution to the selfpurification process and biological waste treatment process. The description of the activated sludge as a specific environment for these organisms and the method of the analysis of the flocs according to their size, shape and composition are presented.
Special attention has to be paid to colourless filamentous organisms as they could cause sludge bulking. Up to now this phenomenon has been attributed solely to the filamentous bacteria Sphaerotilus natans. The authors’ experience was that sludge bulking develops during mass occurence of the genera Leucothrix, Lineola, Spirulina, Achronema and other filamentous species.
