Abstract
In order to clarify the tectonic setting of Cretaceous Mishrif Formation in southeast Iraq, and to explicit the characteristics of stratigraphic-sedimentary evolution and its influence on the distribution of high-quality reservoirs in this area, the tectonic evolution characteristics and tectonic background of the study area, the stratigraphic correlation datum surface and corresponding relationship, the sedimentary facies model, evolution characteristics and its control on the distribution of high-quality reservoirs are systematically analyzed by comprehensively using the regional geology, seismic, logging, core, casting thin sections and analytical tests. The results show that during the late Cretaceous, the Amarah uplift in Iraq-Iran region continues to uplift, resulting in differential uplift-subsidence, forming wide and gentle Najaf inner-shelf sub basin with a moderate scope in southeast Iraq, which controls the stratigraphic development and sedimentary characteristics of the Mishrif Formation. Taking the Ahmadi Formation formed at the maximum flooding surface of the second-order sequence as the isochronous datum surface to complete the regional stratigraphic correlation, it shows that there is little difference in the strata thickness of each oilfield from Ahmadi Formation to Mishrif Formation during the sedimentary period, and four third-order sequences with good regional comparison are developed in the interior. However, the naming of Mishrif Formation in different oilfields is not uniform. After clarifying the stratigraphic correspondence, the evolution law of sedimentary facies is straightened out. The topographic slope of the Mishrif Formation increases gradually from bottom to top, and the overall sedimentary environment increasingly evolves from a carbonate ramp to a platform with weakly rimmed characteristics, which is a sub basin ramp-weakly rimmed carbonate platform model. The characteristics of the same sedimentary facies are consistent among different oilfields, but there is a clear diachronous phenomenon. Among them, the high-energy shoal facies deposition on the margin of weakly rimmed platform is a favorable facies belt for the development of high-quality reservoirs in this area. Mishrif Formation is the main production layer in southeast Iraq, and the above research has certain guiding significance for stratigraphic-sedimentary research and high-quality reservoir distribution prediction in the region.
