Advances in Engineering Design

Abstract

Since armours have been used for a long time in history, the employed materials underwent a strong development. Next to conventional approaches with metals and alloys, new high-performance materials such as glassy polymers, ceramics and composites consisting of fibres or fabrics within a polymer matrix came up. Combining a group of materials in one component can also enhance total performance. The present review focuses on an overview of the established armour materials, especially composite materials. Firstly, each material class is shortly presented, and then, literature has been reviewed and comparing the mechanical properties and the ballistic impact response of the investigated materials. To reduce fabrication cost, natural fibres are a renewable alternative in composite armour to establish aramid fibres. Also, new more advanced approaches, like the usage of different types of nanofiller materials, are presented. Some recent discoveries have shown promising results but still need to overcome certain impediments.
