Some Earthquake-Induced Rockslides in the Central Asia Region

Coseismic Landslides

Part of the book series: Springer Natural Hazards ((SPRINGERNAT))

Abstract

This chapter presents a brief description of rockslides triggered by the historical earthquakes in the Central Asia region. Based on field survey and interpretation of space images, the location, scale, geological and topographic features of these rockslides, and some characteristics of related earthquakes are introduced. Several rockslides, whose triggering earthquakes had not been clarified, are also presented as controversial case studies. Further, a study conducted on the eastern part of the Tien Shan region was introduced to show that strong earthquakes can occur in the same area repeatedly triggering landslides. Identifying the features and locations of these coseismic landslides can help distinguish the return period of strong earthquakes along the same faults and can provide information for estimating the location and timing of these earthquakes.
