Abstract
Diabetes is the most common endocrine and metabolic abnormality identified by hyperglycemia. The antidiabetic medicine available in the market is having more or fewer side effects and long-term complications, which increase the severity of the disease. Ancient medical history of Indian and Chinese medical sciences used to treat diabetes with plant-derived drugs and plant products. Many plants possess hypoglycemic components in them and hence are importantly used for the management of diabetes. Combination therapy (use of drug and plant extract/phytochemical) could be an alternative therapeutic strategy to manage hyperglycemia. This therapy works on multiple targets, and at the same time it reduces the dose of the commercial synthetic drug and hence it will reduce the side effects of these. In this chapter, the effect of such synergistic combinations is discussed. The pharmacokinetics or pharmacodynamic properties of these combinations are also reported. The combinations need to be evaluated clinically so that detailed mechanisms, as well as harmful and beneficial effects, could be understood properly.
