Abstract
Borders with other countries are an important part of a country. Since the end of the Cold War, there has been a rise in the study of borders. At the 1884/1885 African–Berlin Conference, Europeans decided where Nigeria’s land and sea borders would be. There are 4047 km of land borders and 853 km of sea borders. Nigeria is surrounded by the countries of Benin, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. Ethnic and religious differences between the North and South have been around for a long time in the ECOWAS region. This gave rise to social and business ties between the East and West that continued through colonial and post-colonial times, regardless of national borders. Different things have happened in Nigeria because of how globalisation works. The goal of this chapter is to look at how and why Nigeria and Benin trade take place across their borders in the context of the ECOWAS. The study uses a case study and desk research methods to look into the nature of border trade between Nigeria and Benin.
