Abstract

The ocean waves are important source of renewable energy. However, the ocean provides very adverse environment for any kind of machine. Most of the studies are carried out to improve the efficiency of the wave energy converters (WEC) but how do they perform under adverse scenario is still an unexplored area of research. The present study aims to analyze such effect on oscillating water column (OWC) type WEC. The hydrodynamic effects of the tsunami waves are studied, and it is concluded that the driving parameter which leads to failure of OWC is moment generated at the top portion on rear wall of the OWC. Improvement in the design of OWC is proposed to reduce the generated moment. The inclusion of pressure release valve at the rear wall of the OWC reduces the peak moment.
