This entry introduces the learning of student-teachers in initial teacher education programs (ITE) in Taiwan. The first section introduces the education policy backgrounds of the current “reserve-type” teacher education system in Taiwan, which is characterized by quality and quantity control. The second section describes the rationale and structure of the ITE program echoing the recent educational reform and the teacher professionalism competencies guidelines established in 2018. The third section reviews the research published in English to provide more details on the learning of student-teachers in ITE programs in Taiwan. The results of the review highlight the discussion on teacher quality and ITE program outcomes.
