Abstract

In arid regions, water supply is clearly the most important environmental factor. In many areas the next most significant factor is undoubtedly salinity. Sodium chloride is the predominant salt determining salinity followed by sodium carbonate or sodium sulphate and salts of magnesium. Whilst therefore there is no difficulty surrounding the problem of salinity in those cases where there is a clear excess of alkali, be they any one of the above sodium salts, there is considerable difficulty in determining the lower limit of salinization, the point where one passes from halophytic to glycol-phytic conditions and vice versa. In order to surmount this difficulty numerous investigations, using a great variety of plants, have been carried out in different parts of the world with a view to determining the upper limit of salt tolerance for many species. On the basis of all this work it would appear that so far as sodium chloride is concerned 0.5% in the soil solution can be regarded as representing the critical concentration. With other salts insufficient work has as yet been carried out for any figure to be fixed.
