Aspergillus fumigatus

  • Chapter

Abstract

In the recent years, Aspergillus fumigatus has become the most prevalent airborne human fungal pathogen. Although A. fumigatus is a saprophyte that naturally develops in the soil, it is responsible for life-threatening diseases in cancer patients and organ transplant recipients in the hospital environment. The rise in the number of patients that are at risk of developing a fatal A. fumigatus infection together with the lack of appropriate therapies for the treatment of invasive aspergillosis has prompted a surge in the study of this opportunistic fungal pathogen. Recent reviews by Latgé (1999) and combined in a book edited by Brakhage et al. (1999) have extensively covered the various aspects of A. fumigatus pathogenicity, from clinical aspects to molecular approaches. This review will concentrate on the contribution that molecular biology has made to our understanding of A. fumigatus pathogenesis.
