Abstract
The Eurasian Curlew is breeding in temperate, boreal and subarctic habitats scattered over the Palearctic (Fig. 98). It is replaced by the Fareastern Curlew Numenius madagascariensis in the E Palearctic. Mostly 2 distinct subspecies are recognized (Vaurie 1965, Glutz et al. 1977, Cramp & Simmons 1983, Stepanyan 1990):

N. a. arquata, breeding in W and Central Europe.

N. a. orientalis, breeding in Central Asia.
