Transgenic animals as models for hepatocarcinogenesis

  • Chapter
Liver Growth and Repair

Abstract

During the last two decades, important advances have been made in cancer research by employing transgenic animals, including transgene over-expression and more recently gene knockout techniques. Both these approaches have been extremely valuable and important in defining in vivo the role and impact of genes thought to either favor or suppress normal and neoplastic cell growth. With these methodologies, we can generate animal models to dissect out genetic alterations associated with different stages of neoplastic development and we are also able to assess the impact of environmental risk factors. In experimental oncology, the liver has for many reasons always represented a primary system for studying the neoplastic process. Thus, the interest of findings achieved in transgenic models for liver tumorigenesis very often extends beyond hepatology and has implications for the entire cancer research field.
