Abstract

The wide use of pesticides in modern agriculture has stimulated the study of their side-effects on non-target soil microorganisms, including the N2-fixing bacterium Azospirillum sp., whose agronomic use has been recently adapted (1). Little information has been available on the detoxification processes of agrochemicals in the bacterial cell. Recent studies have suggested a possible involvement of glutathione (GSH), and its metabolyzing enzymes, in counteracting the toxicity of some pesticides (2). The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effect of different pesticides (ten fungicides, six herbicides and four insecticides) on the growth of A.brasilense. The effect of the combined use of two fungicides (captan and thiram) and 1,8-naphthalic anhydride (NAF) antidote, on the growth, nitrogenase activity and GSH content was also investigated.
